motivation is just your inner critic in disguise

Motivation Inner Critic in Disguise

Are you good at criticizing?

If you’re a high-achieving woman, chances are the answer is yes. Not just of others—but of yourself.

We tell ourselves it’s just discipline. Drive. Motivation. A way to keep ourselves in line.

But what if that voice in your head isn’t helping? What if it’s actually your inner critic, masquerading as motivation?

How the Inner Critic Disguises Itself as Drive

You know the voice.

  • “You should be further along by now.”

  • “This isn’t good enough yet.”

  • “Why can’t you get it together?”

It wears the mask of tough love. It sounds like it’s pushing you forward. But in reality? It’s quietly tearing down your confidence, your clarity, and your ability to move forward with ease.

What That Voice Is Really Costing You

When we operate from constant criticism—even self-directed criticism—it creates stress responses in the body. We get tense, hyper-focused, perfectionistic.

We spiral in overthinking. We resist taking bold action. We delay decisions because we’re afraid of doing it "wrong."

And it slowly chips away at our momentum.

The inner critic doesn't make us stronger. It makes us smaller.

What to Do Instead

1. Get Curious, Not Critical.
When you hear that voice, pause and ask: Is this helping or hurting?
Try replacing "Why can't I get it together?" with "What might I need right now?"

2. Name Your Saboteur.
That inner voice isn’t you—it’s a pattern. One you learned, probably a long time ago. When you can name it, you can stop believing it. (Take the free Inner Critic Quiz to find yours!)

3. Shift Into Sage.
Instead of judgment, use empathy. Instead of fear, access curiosity. Instead of spiraling, pause and anchor back into what matters.

This is what we practice inside my coaching work—and I see women make radical shifts when they learn how to interrupt the critic and activate their inner wisdom.
