What If You Don't Have to Become Someone Else Before You're Worthy?
What If You Don't Have to Become Someone Else Before You're Worthy?
Have you ever caught yourself thinking...
"Once I finally..."
Once I lose the weight...
Once I get the promotion...
Once I grow the business...
Once the kids are older...
Once I become more confident...
Then...
I'll finally feel like I'm enough.
It's such a familiar thought that we rarely stop to question it.
But what if the finish line keeps moving?
What if the person you're trying so hard to become has quietly convinced you that who you are today isn't enough?
Why Do We Feel Like We're Never Enough? The Moving Target
I don't think most of us wake up and decide to tie our worth to our accomplishments.
It happens slowly.
A good grade earns praise.
Working hard earns approval.
Being helpful earns appreciation.
Success earns significance.
Before long, we begin believing that worth is something we achieve instead of something we already possess.
So we keep striving.
Keep proving.
Keep becoming...
without ever feeling like we've arrived.
The target keeps moving.
And the backpack gets heavier.
How We Learn to Tie Worth to Achievement: The Rock We Rarely Notice
Over the past month we've talked about the rocks we carry. You can read How Did Life Get So Heavy? Finding Freedom from the Weight You Were Never Meant to Carry if you missed it.
Fear.
Other people's opinions.
Comparison.
But underneath all of those is another one that's surprisingly heavy.
The belief that who I am today isn't enough.
That belief quietly shapes everything.
It tells us to work harder.
To do more.
To be more.
Not because we love what we're becoming...
But because we're afraid who we are isn't enough.
Why Growth and Worth Are Different
One of the most freeing realizations I've had is this:
Growth and worth are not the same thing.
I absolutely believe we are meant to grow.
To learn.
To mature.
To become more fully who we were created to be.
But becoming isn't how we earn worth.
It's what naturally flows from knowing we're already loved.
There's a profound difference between saying:
"I need to change so I'll finally be enough."
and
"Because I know I'm deeply loved, I'm free to grow."
One is driven by fear.
The other by freedom.
Traveling Lighter Starts with Receiving, Not Proving
I've been thinking a lot this month about Jesus' invitation:
"Come to me, all who are weary and burdened..."
Notice what He doesn't say.
He doesn't say,
"Come to me once you've fixed yourself."
Or,
"Come back when you've become someone more impressive."
He simply says,
"Come."
That's it.
Just come.
The invitation isn't reserved for the future version of you.
It's extended to the one carrying the backpack today.
The one who's tired.
The one who's trying.
The one who's wondering if they're enough.
Becoming Isn't About Earning Love
One of the things I hope you've heard throughout this month's series is that becoming isn't about becoming someone worthy of love.
It's about becoming free enough to live from the love you've already been given.
When we know we're loved...
We stop trying to prove ourselves.
We become more curious than critical.
More faithful than frantic.
More present than pressured.
And somehow...
The backpack gets lighter.
A Question to Carry with You This Week
As July comes to a close, I'd love to leave you with one question.
What if you stopped waiting to become someone else before believing you are deeply loved today?
Sit with that.
Don't rush to answer it.
Just notice what it stirs in you.
Because sometimes the lightest step forward begins when we stop trying to earn what has already been freely given.
Continue the Conversation
If this series has encouraged you, I'd love to continue the conversation.
Every Monday, I send Mindset Monday—a thoughtful email with 3 reflections, 2 quotes, and 1 question to help you travel lighter and become all you were created to be.
And if you're ready to explore what's been weighing you down in a more personal way, I'd be honored to walk alongside you through coaching.
