Whose Finish Line Are You Running Toward? How to Stop Comparing Your Life to Others
Whose Finish Line Are You Running Toward?
Have you ever watched someone finish a race? There's something beautiful about it Some runners cross the finish line with their hands in the air. Others collapse into the arms of a friend. Some are trying to beat everyone else. Others are simply grateful they finished.
The interesting thing is...
Every runner knows where their finish line is. They aren't accidentally running someone else's race.
I wonder how often we do.
Somewhere Along the Way...
Most of us didn't wake up one morning and decide what success looked like. We inherited it.
Success looked like...
The promotion.
The marriage.
The bigger house.
The full calendar.
The thriving business.
The perfect family.
The retirement account.
The packed schedule.
None of those things are inherently wrong. But somewhere along the way, many of us stopped asking a very important question.
Who decided this was the finish line?
The Backpack Gets Heavier
Earlier this month, we talked about the backpack we all carry. [read it here] Sometimes the heaviest rocks aren't fear or other people's opinions. Sometimes they're expectations we never consciously chose. [read How to Stop Worrying About What Other People Think]
The expectation that we should always be productive.
The expectation that busier means more important.
The expectation that if someone else is doing more, maybe we're falling behind.
Comparison quietly slips those rocks into our backpack. And then convinces us they belong there.
Comparison Is a Terrible Compass
Comparison becomes a trap when we allow someone else's path to define our success instead of discovering the unique purpose we've been created to live. Comparison has an interesting way of changing our direction. Instead of asking,
"Where is God inviting me?"
we start asking,
"Where is everyone else going?"
Instead of noticing the pace that's healthy for us...we speed up because someone else passed us.
Instead of celebrating what we've been entrusted with...we become distracted by what someone else has.
Eventually we're exhausted. Not because our path was too hard. Because we wandered onto someone else's.
Jesus Never Hurried
One of the things that has become increasingly meaningful to me is noticing the pace of Jesus. He was never rushed. Never frantic. Never driven by comparison. He always seemed to know where He was going...and who He was listening to.
I wonder if that's part of what He meant when He invited us to take His yoke upon us. A yoke doesn't just share the weight. It also sets the direction and the pace.
Maybe traveling lighter isn't only about putting down the rocks. Maybe it's about walking beside Someone who was never asking us to run someone else's race in the first place.
Your Finish Line Might Look Different
Maybe success for you right now isn't building something bigger.
Maybe it's healing.
Maybe it's being fully present with your family.
Maybe it's taking care of your health.
Maybe it's serving faithfully in a quiet season.
Maybe it's simply becoming the person you were created to be.
Not the person comparison keeps suggesting you should become.
A Question for This Week
The next time you catch yourself feeling behind...
pause before you speed up.
Instead ask yourself:
Whose finish line am I running toward?
Because not every finish line is yours.
And traveling lighter sometimes means stepping off a race you were never meant to run.
