When You're Circling Instead of Moving | Becoming Transformation

When You're Circling Instead of Moving

Sometimes thinking harder isn't what creates clarity.

Have you ever noticed yourself replaying the same conversation...

...for days?

You think about what you should have said.

What you wish you'd done differently.

How the other person probably interpreted it.

What you'll say if it comes up again.

The conversation ends.

But somehow, it keeps going in your head.

Or maybe it's not a conversation.

Maybe it's a decision.

You make another pros-and-cons list.

Listen to another podcast.

Read another article.

Ask another friend.

And somehow...

you still don't feel any closer to knowing what to do.

If that's ever happened to you, let me offer a different possibility.

Maybe you're not stuck.

Maybe you're circling.

Circling Feels Like Progress

One of the reasons circling is so deceptive is because it feels productive.

Your brain is busy.

You're thinking.

Analyzing.

Preparing.

Trying to make the right decision.

From the outside, it looks like you're doing the work.

But inside...

you keep returning to the same place.

Not because you're incapable.

Because you're asking the same question from the same perspective.

That's what we've been talking about all month.

Sometimes we don't need another answer.

We need a better question.

Thinking Isn't the Same as Moving

I've noticed something in coaching conversations.

The breakthrough rarely happens when someone finally thinks of the perfect answer.

It usually happens when they stop defending the question they've been asking.

Instead of...

"How do I make everyone happy?"

the question becomes...

"Is it actually my responsibility to make everyone happy?"

Instead of...

"How do I stop feeling afraid?"

the question becomes...

"What's underneath the fear?"

Sometimes one new question opens a door that hours of overthinking never could.

Borrow Someone Else's Perspective

When we're circling, it's almost impossible to notice we're doing it.

That's why another perspective matters.

Not because someone else gets to make your decisions.

Because they can often hear the assumption hiding inside your question.

I've had friends do that for me.

I've had mentors do it.

I've certainly experienced it in coaching.

Sometimes another person simply says,

"Can I ask you something?"

And suddenly you realize...

You've been trying to solve the wrong problem.

Traveling Lighter Sometimes Looks Like Letting Go of the Question

This month we've been talking about better questions.

Here's one more.

What if clarity doesn't come from thinking harder...

What if it comes from becoming curious?

Curiosity softens certainty.

It makes room for possibility.

It invites us to see differently.

And that's often where freedom begins.

Before You Go...

Here's the question I'm carrying this week.

Where in your life have you been circling instead of moving?

Not to judge yourself.

Simply to notice.

Because sometimes awareness is the first step toward clarity.

And sometimes one good question is enough to help you begin traveling lighter.
